The Coolest Actor in the World!

Tak Sakaguchi in Versus (2000)

Tak Sakaguchi is a Japanese actor, director, fight choreorapher, and stuntman. He was once an underground street fighter, skilled in martial arts, until director Ryuhei Kitamura cast him in Versus (2000), the greatest Japanese action/horror film ever made. Versus mixed stylish gunplay, martial arts, samurai swordplay, yakuza, zombies, and plenty of bullets and gore into 120 minutes of bad-ass, non-stop action. Versus was, for me, a revelation with it’s ultra-cool posturing and low-budgeted simplicity [who needs characters with names anyway?], and, with it, my fascination with Asian cult cinema transferred from Hong Kong to Japan immediately. And, from then on, I believed that Tak Sakaguchi was the coolest actor in the world!

Tak Sakaguchi, who looked like a young Japanese Johnny Depp in Versus, has since been involved with with some of my favorite Japanese films. He played smaller roles in movies such as Ryuhei Kitamura‘s Azumi (2003), Shusuke Kaneko‘s sequel Azumi 2: Death or Love (2005), and Kenta Fukasaku‘s Yo-Yo Girl Cop (2006). He played brash Iga ninja Yashamaru in Ten Shimoyama‘s Shinobi: Heart Under Blade (2005), and starred as Grave in Death Trance (2006). He co-directed Sushi Typhoon’s Mutant Girls Squad (2010) with Noboru Iguchi and Yoshihiro Nishimura. He co-starred in that film, too. And, in 2011, he starred in two over-the-top Sushi Typhoon action comedies: Deadball and Yakuza Weapon. He also co-directed the latter film.

Hmm, I feeling like watching Deadball again – oh wait, I did …
