Cockneys vs Zombies

Here’s another entry that was originally posted on Girls, Guns and Zombies

CockneysZombies-01Cockneys vs Zombies (2012) is a British zombie comedy film that tries hard to be like Shaun of the Dead (2004), and, as far as I’m concerned, it succeeds, but, to a lesser degree. Cockneys vs Zombies is not a classic like Shaun of the Dead, but, it’s a whole lot of fun to watch. The movie, directed by Matthias Hoene and written by James Moran and Lucas Roche, is well-acted, with plenty of likable characters, laughs, and cool zombie kills.

In London’s East End, where Jack the Ripper once terrorized prostitutes in the Victorian era, construction workers unseal a 17th century tomb and are bitten by flesh-eating zombies. Meanwhile, a pair of inept but well-meaning brothers, Terry (Rasmus Hardiker) and Andy (Harry Treadaway), along with their badass safe-cracking cousin Katy (Michelle Ryan), a loser friend Davey (Jack Doolan), and a psychotic veteran “Mental” Mickey (Ashley Bashy Thomas), attempt to rob a bank to save their ex-gangster grandad’s retirement home. The police arrive, Mickey fires his guns and takes sweet customer Emma (Georgia King) and winy bank manager Clive (Tony Gardner) as hostages. But, then, the whole zombie outbreak makes matters even worse! They retreat to a warehouse to figure out a plan.

CockneysZombies-03Meanwhile (again), grandad Ray (Alan Ford) rallies his retired cronies, including Peggy (Honor Blackman) who adores Ray, to defend their home against the amassing zombie hordes. But, eventually, Terry, Andy, Katy and Emma, the only survivors, arrive, after raiding Mickey’s cache of weapons, to save the day. In the end, Katy brandishes a samurai sword, slicing up zombies all around her, in an awesome display of her badassness. But, even though Andy did the same thing in an earlier scene, chicks with samurai swords are always better!

CockneysZombies-02Yeah, Cockneys vs Zombies is dumb silly fun, but, fun nonetheless, with an awesome cast! Michelle Ryan played Jaime Sommers in the short-lived American TV series Bionic Woman (2007). She kicked ass on that show, too, for 8 episodes. Sadly, I was, I think, the only one who ever watched it! And, I didn’t even know until now that she is actually a British actress! Alan Ford is best known for his roles in Guy Ritchie‘s movies Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) and Snatch (2000), as well as the dumb but fun Strippers vs Werewolves (2012). I’ll need to post about that one soon! And, of course, the great Honor Blackman played Bond girl Pussy Galore in Goldfinger (1964) as well as Cathy Gale in British TV series The Avengers (1962-64). She has beautiful eyes, even at 88 years old.

Cockneys vs Zombies doesn’t suck, and that’s awesome!
